A lovely set of the French novelist and playwright Alain-René Lesage's masterpiece, in a good binding with the signature of the binder Root. Lesage (1668-1747), began his career translating Spanish works and came to appreciate the form pioneered in Spain known as the picaresque novel. This is a new edition with engravings from paintings by Robert Smirke (1752-1845), the English artist. Smirk studied at the Royal Academy and is well known for his illustrative work.
