Anthony Payne (London)

Anthony Payne represents Hordern House in Europe and is based in London. A Cambridge graduate, he was an auctioneer at Christie's before joining Bernard Quaritch, where he worked with Derek McDonnell until Derek moved to Australia to found Hordern House with Anne McCormick. During his twenty years as a director of Quaritch and since 2008, when he left to pursue an independent career, Anthony has worked closely with Hordern House, sharing the firm's special interests in voyages and discoveries, particularly in the Pacific.

Besides his work as an antiquarian bookseller, Anthony is actively engaged in scholarly research and is writing a bibliographical study of the various travel books and other writings of Richard Hakluyt (1552–1616). He has been awarded a PhD for the first instalment of this, ‘Richard Hakluyt: An Essay in Bibliography 1580–88’, which the Hakluyt Society plans to publish in due course.  He has already published several short studies of Hakluyt and sits on the editorial board (as textual editor) of the forthcoming critical edition of Hakluyt’s Principal Navigations (1598–1600) to be published by Oxford University Press. From 2009-14 he was an Honorary Research Associate at University College London.
