Jacques Cujas (1522–1590), intellectual luminary of Renaissance Europe and the preeminent figure of the Mos Gallicus ("French School") of legal humanism, revolutionized jurisprudence by introducing rigorous philological and historical methods to read Roman law within its original social and cultural context. His lectures at the University of Bourges drew future statesmen and legal minds from across Europe, earning him the moniker Princeps Jurisconsultorum ("Prince of Legal Scholars"). His masterworks—notably his Paratitla (concise, analytical syntheses of Justinian's Digest and Codex) included here, and his extensive commentary restoring original manuscript texts—stripped centuries of medieval misinterpretations away to rebuild a pure, historically accurate framework of Western civil law.
