Utopia in Minoan Crete: the evils of slavery

First edition of this antiquarian utopia set in Minoan Crete, chronicling the reconciliation of all strata of society. The success of this novel by the Professeur d'éloquence at the Royal College at la Flèche led to several editions within a few years. Like so many books of the imaginary voyage tradition, this work takes Fénélon's Télémaque as its template, and has a similarly socialist distrust of private property and the evils of slavery.
