Designs for Ornamental Villas. P. F. ROBINSON.

Designs for Ornamental Villas.

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1836.

Quarto, lithograph title and 96 lithograph plates; original quarter roan.

Third edition "greatly improved" a re- issue of the 1830 edition by Bohn, with a new preface. Robinson (1776-1858) was a prolific and versatile designer of country mansions and picturesque cottages. In the present work he provides sixteen designs, some of which were executed, for twelve residences, two lodges, a garden house, and stables. "The range of styles represented perhaps was the most eclectic in British architectural literature to date" (Archer): Swiss, Grecian, Palladian, Old English, Castellated, Ancient Manor House, Modern Italian, Anglo-Norman, Henry VII, Elizabethan, Ancient Timber, and Tuscan. Each design is illustrated in plan, elevation, and 'Scenic View'. Most of the scenic views were drawn on stone by J.D. Harding and printed on India paper.

Of course Robinson's promotion of the cottage orné proved influential in Australia, where it became a popular architectural style with colonial architects (see Broadbent, The Australian Colonial House, p. 354).
