With coloured botanical plates by Frederick Nodder

The first edition of this charming eighteenth century botanical work by Thomas Martyn (1735–1825), English botanist, professor of Botany at Cambridge University and a member of the Royal Society. Martyn, who published a number of works with a pedagogical approach, had translated Rousseau's Lettres sur la botanique along with a series of letters by himself explaining the Linnean system. As he explains in the preface here, this is a stand-alone work, in which six of the plates illustrate the Rousseau text and the other thirty-two his Linnean letters.

The thirty-eight lovely full page hand coloured engravings were drawn and engraved by Frederick Nodder (1770-1801), the highly-regarded English natural history artist. Nodder illustrated George Shaw's periodical The Naturalist's Miscellany and he helped Joseph Banks prepare Banks' Florilegium... converting most of Sidney Parkinson's Australian plant drawings from the Endeavour expedition into paintings and helping with the process of engraving them for publication,
