High-quality facsimile edition, limited to 1,000 copies, of the original 1847 edition of this superb colour-plate book, Angas's famous celebration of the Māori people whom he observed during his visit to New Zealand in 1844.
The New Zealanders completed Angas's justly famous trio of superbly illustrated accounts of travels in the southern hemisphere, the other two being the famous South Australia Illustrated and the results of his South African visit, The Kaffirs Illustrated. Angas lived for many years in Australia but as he explains in his preface here he "visited both Islands of New Zealand and spent a considerable period in travelling round their coasts, and penetrating through the interior -- by seeking out nearly every tribe of natives, and living amongst them for some time, in the remote and almost unknown parts of the country, I have succeeded in obtaining portraits of the most important chiefs, with their families, and have made drawings, on the spot, of all objects of interest connected with their history."
Hocken, pp. 129-131('magnificent book… rare').
