Exploration of the interior

This French overview concentrates on exploration of the Australian interior between 1860 and 1862. By the second half of the nineteenth century, explorers were aware of the dangers and slim prospects of success before they set out. Despite the hardship, exploration continued and in these years central Australia was opened up in pursuit of a route from south to north.

The text is devoted largely to the voyages of Stuart, Gregory, Burke and Wills, Landsborough, and McKinlay but the large folding map of Australia at the end shows the different colonies, and the routes of the principal explorers from 1840 to 1863.
