Item #5000435 Voyage à Madagascar et aux Indes Orientales. Alexis ROCHON, Abbé.
Voyage à Madagascar et aux Indes Orientales.

Voyage à Madagascar et aux Indes Orientales.

Paris: chez Prault, 1791.

Octavo, with a folding map of Madagascar; contemporary polished calf, double labels.

Madagascar, and Vietnam

The scarce first edition. Abbé Rochon was sent to the East Indies to conduct a hydrographic survey of the Indian Ocean. His account of Madagascar was written to emphasise the possibilities it offered for French colonisation, though in fact it was at about this time that the Merina kingdom was reunited by King Andrianampoinimerina and his son King Radama I. The French would not colonise Madagascar until the late 1880s.

A long supplementary section at the end of the book describes Rochon's travels in Cochin China (modern Vietnam). Later versions under similar titles were effectively different works, with numerous additions.
