New York: Harper and Brothers, No 82 Cliff Street, XVIIIXXXV [sic, for 1835].

Two volumes, octavo, with 10 plates, some folding; in fine condition in a later half calf binding over (? original) blue moiré cloth.

Unrecorded variant predating the New York first edition

An apparently unrecorded pre-publication variant in two volumes of the first edition: the regular first edition was produced as a single ungainly volume, whereas this is in two continuously paginated volumes, each with its own title-page. It collates: vol. I title, Dedication [iv], Contents [v]-x, Introduction [v]-x, text [11]-234, Appendix [235]-249; vol. II title, text 235-521. It has an oddly misconceived roman numeral date on the title-pages.

Comparison with a regular first edition reveals no differences in the introductory material or main text of the narrative. The medical statistics and meteorological tables appended to the end of the regular edition are not found here, where there is just one appendix, paginated [235]-249 (duplicating the pagination of that section of text), corresponding to [523]-536 and 553 of the regular edition's appendix. The contents list is the same in both, ending with chapter XXX without mention of appendices. The title of the regular edition has the additional phrase "including a particular account of the engagement at Quallah-Battoo.,. ". A copyright notice is printed on the verso of the title of the regular edition but nowhere in the present variant, which we suggest was a trial format produced before the printing of the appendices in their final form and the decision to publish the entire work of over 500 pages as a single volume. The plates are the same In both formats; they are present in this copy in noticeably rich impressions, much superior to those in the regular edition, which Is further evidence that this two volume example is the earlier.

The plates comprise a "View of Valparaiso"; "U.S. Frigate Potomac passing Mount Vernon"; "View of Rio Janeiro"; "Cape Town and Table Mountain"; "Action at Quallah Battoo"; "View of Canton"; "Usual Walking Costume of Lima"; "View of Lima"; "U.S. Frigate Potomac passing two icebergs"; and a plan of Lima before its destruction in the great earthquake of 1746.

"In 1827, Reynolds began lobbying for a government sanctioned and financed expedition to explore both the South Seas and the polar regions. While waiting for the outcome of his efforts (which were to result in the United States Exploring Expedition, commanded by Charles Wilkes), he made several sea voyages. In 1832, right after one of these voyages, he was in Valparaiso. The man-of-war Potomac arrived in port; he went aboard for a visit and was invited to join the crew as private secretary to Commodore Downes... During her course of duty, the Potomac visited Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Quallah-Battoo... Canton, Hawaii, Tahiti, Callao and Lima, the Galapagos Islands, and the Falkland Islands" (Hill, 1443; for Downes, see DAB).

Most bibliographies cite only the usual one volume edition.
