A Statistical Account of the British Settlements in Australasia… The Third Edition…
A Statistical Account of the British Settlements in Australasia; including the colonies of New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land: with an enumeration of the advantages which they offer to emigrants, as well with reference to each other, as to the United States of America and the Canadas; and directions and advice to emigrants. The Third Edition.
London: Geo. B. Whittaker, 1824.
Two volumes, octavo, frontispiece view of Sydney and two folding maps; a fine copy in contemporary half calf, with marbled boards and edges, spines panelled in gilt with red and green labels; old ownership inscription to title page.
The best edition, with a view of Sydney
A handsomely bound coy of the third edition, the edition "embellished with new maps" and illustrated - unlike the first - by an engraved view of Sydney after an original drawing by J. W. Lewin, now believed to be lost. The finely delineated view shows the rather eccentric house of Billy Blue, Macquarie's West Indian boatman on the eastern side of Sydney Cove, and the growing settlement on the western side. The accompanying engraved maps of the settled areas of New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land complete this informative compilation, which provided intending emigrants with much important information about New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land.

First published in 1819, the book appeared as an extended and revised second edition in 1820 and, by the time this third edition appeared in 1824, it had almost doubled its original size. It was the most popular book about New South Wales of its time, and bears the distinction of having been the first book published by a native-born Australian. Wentworth's account gives a great deal of information about New South Wales for intending migrants as well as expressing some of his own ideas on the future development of the colony. His belief in an Australian landed gentry, which he expounds here, stayed with him all his life.
