Ibsen first published Peer Gynt in 1867, and with its success forged the way for an appreciation of Scandinavian literature, and theatre in particular, George Bernard Shaw being an early devotee. Edvard Grieg was invited by Ibsen to compose music for a staged version, Grieg's wife noting it to be a "work of such witchery and so permeated with the Norwegian spirit".

This spirited mythic world, with its moorland encounters and effusions of trolls was ideal ground for Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) whose custom it was "to immerse himself in his chosen texts…which he would then illustrate in full detail. For each of his major books his designs are abundant and carefully finished." This fine limited edition featuring illustrations from Rackham's late maturity "could not be mistaken for those of any other illustrator" (Ray, The illustrator and the book in England from 1790-1914).
