The First Governor of New South Wales

The classic contemporary portrait of Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet and first governor of the fledgling convict settlement at Port Jackson. This portrait was engraved as the frontispiece to The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay, a compilation of Phillip's dispatches and the most significant official account of the perilous early history of the settlement.
