Eugen Spiro was born in Breslau in 1874 and worked as a landscape and portrait artist in Germany and later the United States. His portraits of prominent creative and scientific personalities won him lasting acclaim in both continents. After a spell in Paris Spiro returned to Germany in 1914 and rose to prominence amongst the fashionable Berlin art scene; he served as chairman of the Berlin Secession and was appointed Professor of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
On account of his Jewish ancestry, Spiro was prohibited from working by the ascendant Third Reich from 1933 onwards. He finally emigrated to the United States with his family in 1941 and although 67 years of age upon arrival, Spiro continued to work and exhibit up until decease in 1972 at the age of 98.
The portfolio was originally issued with 34 plates in an edition of 55 copies; this copy is an example of the later expanded edition with an additional 3 plates (bringing the total to 37) and limited to 30 numbered copies.
