Fine Americana in original wrappers

Scarce in the original wrappers: This is an intimate ethnological portrayal of native peoples encountered during Catholic missionary activity across the globe from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Taking the form of collected letters and despatches with numerous maps and over 100 hand coloured engravings, this set is noteworthy for its visual depiction of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Four volumes specifically concern the cultures of North and South America: the first is entirely devoted to Canada, while the remaining three contain discrete sections on Louisiana, California, San Domingo, Guiana, Peru, Chile and Paraguay. In addition to the missionary correspondence, each section includes description of the culture, history and geography of each region. In total the four American volumes contain 22 hand coloured engraving and two folding maps.

China is generously examined over the first five volumes, and many fascinating Jesuit despatches from the Imperial Court are here offered to the public gaze. Throughout the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Jesuit scholars enjoyed favour with the Emperor and his Court, and were especially admired for their prowess in astronomy and mathematics. The five volumes concerning China contain a total of 29 engravings and a detailed map.

The remaining regions revealed include 'the Levant' – here used in an expanded sense to encompass the vast geography of North Africa, the Middle East and Persia. One discrete volume concerns the kingdoms of Southeast Asia including Tonkin and Siam, while the final four volumes are devoted to India.
