A French longboat in the Warragamba

Early view of the Warragamba River in the lower Blue Mountains, the site of Sydney's ever important Warragamba Dam, from the official published account of the major French voyage of 1817-1820 to Australia and the Pacific commanded by Louis de Freycinet. Published as plate 96 in the Atlas Historique, it is captioned as being "d'après un dessein communiqué" but likely represents a version of an original work by Jacques Arago or Alphonse Pellion, the two artists responsible for most of the images recorded in the course of the long expedition.

The French took considerable interest in the penal colony at Port Jackson, and Freycinet was astounded by the growth of the settlement and the quality of the architecture he encountered, having previously visited Sydney Cove as an officer on the Baudin voyage of 1800-1804. This fine view reflects the curiosity of the French visitors who enjoyed warm hospitality now that Britain and France were at peace and could inspect the settlement unhindered.
