Traditional island dance troupe
A rare nineteenth century survival, this photograph depicts a native Hawaiian dance troupe with instruments and traditional costume. Prepared for the tourist market circa 1880, this photograph depicts five women in traditional dress and a man in serge pants and shirt posing with a drum. Originally the hula was a Royal dance that came under the scrutiny of missionary eyes; however, by the later nineteenth century an interest (and idealisation) of native lifestyle led to a revival of the hula for tourists visiting the islands.
