During his time at the University of London studying mathematics Babbage became the pupil of William Chadwell Mylne (1781-1863), engineer of the New River Company, London, for three years engaged in waterworks and surveying. This was the foundation of his move to Australia in 1851 when Lord Grey recommended Babbage to make a geological and mineralogical survey of the colony of South Australia.
