Alleged corruption in Van Diemen's Land

Regards a petition of complaint brought to attention of parliament. Henry Melville, publisher of the Colonial Times had published articles critical of the Supreme Court following the trial of Robert Bryant for cattle rustling. Interestingly, in this petition, Melville also asserts that Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur misused convict labour for personal gain by ordering a road built to his own property. The petition was originally forwarded to Sir John Franklin.
