Ferns of the Blue Mountains

An interesting and detailed letter on the ferns of the Cumberland and Blue Mountains, sent by the Australian botanist and writer William Woolls.

An interesting and detailed letter on the ferns of the Cumberland and Blue Mountains, sent by the Australian botanist and writer William Woolls.

Woolls advises his friend that he will have to send to England for Bentham & von Mueller's Flora Australiensis, further noting that it is published at 20 shillings a volume, that the first six have been published and the seventh is nearly finished, while an eighth on ferns is planned (but never eventuated). Woolls also recommends Hooker's Synopsis Filicum on the subject of ferns; he bought his copy from "Piddington" (presumably the Sydney bookseller W.R. Piddington) for 36 shillings, but thought the price high.

Of some significance is Woolls' long list of ferns growing in the Cumberland, with notes on those specifically from the Blue Mountains, which gives an insight into his botanical interests. He notes also that many of them 'may be procured at Manly, Lane Cove, the North Rocks.' The letter signs off with his regards to Mr. and Mrs. Watkins.

Woolls (1814-1893) emigrated to Australia as a 16-year old, sailing on the Grecian with Australia's first bishop, William Broughton. He had a long and interesting career in Australia, promoting Parramatta and the Cumberland, publishing verse, and particularly working on botanical subjects, becoming a member of the Linnaean Society in 1865.
