The country sacred to Confucius

The author states his intention as such: 'The object of the journey was to study in some degree the Province of Shantung, its resources and inhabitants, to visit the country sacred to the memory of Confucius, to come into touch with as many of the missionaries as possible, to test the feelings of the natives in the remoter districts towards foreigners and to examine what truth there might be in the various reports of possible disturbances in the near future in Shantung (the home of Boxerism), and finally to examine the present state of the Imperial Grand Canal'.
