Gift from William P Auld, (vigneron & a surveyor on the 1861-2 McDouall Stuart expedition to traverse the continent, and member of the ill-fated Boyle Finniss expedition to select a site for the capital of the Northern Territory) to Finniss's son, a long-serving public official in the South Australian railways and founding member of the South Australian Historical Society.

Robert Bruce was South Australian pastoralist, popular writer and poet. Coondambo was the name of his property near Port Augusta and latterly, his home in Adelaide.

A fine example of early provincial literature.
