The author of this book is not disclosed, however, an early owner who has signed the title page 'David Anderson' identifies the writer as 'Mr Macculloch' (ink notation). Further clues are revealed in the preface: 'The following sheets contain the substance of a series of Letters which appeared in the Morning Chronicle in the course of last summer, under the signature of COSSIM. The author finding the subject too extensive to be fully discussed within the limits of a newspaper, resolved to submit his thoughts to the Public in the present shape.
