Babbage complains of his treatment and dismissal following unsuccessful infland survey work in South Australia.

'In 1858 the surveyor Benjamin Herschel Babbage had been sent by the government with instructions to explore to the west of Lake Torrens, then to return to Port Augusta and search for grazing land in the far north of the colony. Babbage, however, took such an inordinately long time over the first phase of his survey that frustrated pastoralists lobbied the government to have him replaced by somebody who would see the task through with greater urgency' (Howgego W7,B).
