Although Landsborough was not successful in locating traces of the forlorn Burke and Wills expedition, he had a keen eye for good pastoral land. Indeed, prior to the formation of the Queensland relief expedition in 1861, Landsborough had been professionally employed in exploring and surveying the remote interior for private grazing interests. This training is reflected in his journal, and 'Landsborough's discovery of good pastoral land on his more extensive expeditions created greater contemporary interest and his journals were quickly made available to the public' (Australian Rare Books p.241).
When Landsborough fell out with Frederick Walker, leader of the other Queensland relief expedition (and by many accounts a thoroughly unsavoury character), he proceeded south from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Cooper's Creek. Accordingly, his journal records much of the territory encountered by Burke and Wills on their tragic journey northward.
