Kangaroos in London

A good early report of the Zoological Society of London which had been founded only nine years earlier in 1826. The report does not merely provide financial accounts but also interesting notes on the Society's gardens, and the menagerie of 220 mammals and 302 birds.

A good early report of the Zoological Society of London which had been founded only nine years earlier in 1826. The report does not merely provide financial accounts but also interesting notes on the Society's gardens, and the menagerie of 220 mammals and 302 birds.

Perusing the report shows that the Society was well set up for monkeys and lemurs, and had birds from all over the globe, including the Australian white-crested Cockatoo. There are notes on their breeding program, and an extensive list of acquisitions and donations, notable among them "a new species of Kangaroo and other animals from Australia" from Captain Parry, the polar explorer who had made Port Stephens his home from 1829 to 1834, and a selection of birds from North America presented by "Mr Audubon". Among other additions were a "One-horned Indian Rhinoceros" and three Curassows, hatched at the Menagerie.
