French portrait of Sir Joseph Banks

Fine head-and-shoulders portrait of Sir Joseph Banks by Ambrose Tardieu. Banks is shown wearing the star and garter' the comments that the image was based on the painting by Sir Thomas Phillips, and the borrowing is certainly very clear. The caption also gives a potted biography of Banks, noting his death in London in 1820, and thus helping to date the engraving which was no doubt engraved and issued to mark his death.
