Ile de France [Mauritius]: perhaps aboard ship, May 1818.

Single quarto sheet, bordered in ink and captioned, mostly blank except for small simple drawing of a caterpillar.

Drawn by Arago in Mauritius

Although very slight this is a charming small depiction of a small caterpillar, captioned by Jacques Arago ("Ile de France. Voyage de l'Uranie, Insectes. Pl. No. 12") and initialled by him in ink "J.A.". It is an original drawing for a detail in one of the plates published in the 1824 Zoologie atlas as part of the official account of Freycinet's world voyage in the Uranie. The expedition called at the island in late May 1818 and spent some time there, welcomed by the French colonial administration.
