Silencing the convict Press

The only edition of this letter, addressed by Lang to William Neill, Manager of the City Bank.

The only edition of this letter, addressed by Lang to William Neill, Manager of the City Bank.

Neill had petitioned the Parliament to 'obtain from the country a substantial recognition of the great services you have rendered to the colony'. Lang, ever the sport, responded with a list of his principal non-political services, including reference to his schemes to bring out respectable Scots mechanics, his role in the founding of the Australian College, and his earlier attempts at silencing what he calls 'the convict Press'.

Having finished this statement of his non-political services, Lang concludes 'It is well known that it was my instance, and principally through my exertions that Victoria was separated from this Colony in the first instance, and Queensland thereafter; but as these may be regarded as political services, and are still considered by some of our Members of Parliament, no services at all but rather the reverse, I shall say nothing further on the subject.'
