Stockholm: Lith. Art. Anstalt, 1872.

Quarto, with 12 tinted lithographic plates; a very good copy in original decorated boards.

Fine Hawaiian royal portraits

Scarce and finely illustrated voyage account, including handsome lithographed portraits of the Hawaiian monarchs Kamehameha the Fourth and Kamehameha the Fifth. The author, Adolf Ekelöf, was a young Swedish lieutenant who sailed on the English frigate Zealous to the Pacific in 1867. In addition to descriptions of California and British Columbia, this book is particularly interesting for its Pacific material, with significant entries on Hawaii, Tahiti, and other South Sea Islands. Unusually, Ekelof provides both the music and words to an Hawaiian Folk Hymn and a Tahitian National Melody.

The lithographic plates are well rendered - some are clearly produced from portrait photographs while others are based on marine and landscape sketches. Of the twelve plates, seven are of Hawaiian and Tahitian subjects. In addition to the plate of the Hawaiian monarchs mentioned above, the book includes portraits of Queen Pomare of Tahiti and a coastal scene at Waikiki.
