This portrait is stylistically similar to the work of Arago's predecessor Nicolas Petit, who served as an illustrator on the previous French voyage to Australian waters under Nicolas Baudin. The present portrait is strongly reminiscent of Petit's Aboriginal study titled "Sauvage adulte des environs du port Jackson", (plate 20 in the official Baudin voyage account).
