James Cowles Prichard (1786-1848) spent several decades amassing pictorial information to support his theory that all of the world's inhabitants shared a common ancestry and were originally dark skinned. His Natural History of Man contained portraits of the various human races drawn from published voyage and expedition accounts, and was an important foundation for modern ethnological science
