A very good engraved portrait of Banks, based on the painting by Thomas Phillips commissioned by the Royal Society, a famous image of Banks in his later life as President of the Royal Society, with the motto "Nullius in Verba" prominently shown on the chair.

This is very similar to another Wagstaff image in this list, but has the London imprint instead. The caption also notes that this image was prepared 'Under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge': this group was founded in 1826, with the intention of making affordable copies of important publications available to the rapidly expanding reading public.
