Author's presentation copy of this rare Launceston-printed primer on the history and geography of Tasmania.The author begins by describing the physical characteristics of the Island, flora and fauna. Then goes on to recount the early discovery of the island that involved the explorers Marion, Tasman, Furneaux, Cook, then further exploration by Bass and Flinders. She then devotes a long chapter to the native inhabitants of the island going into some detail in describing their customs. Towards the end the contributions of each governor are discussed, finishing with the present governor Charles DuCane who arrived in 1869 - the main topic occupying the public at that time was the construction of the Main Line Railway between Hobart Town and Launceston.The work was given to Mrs. William Bayles by the author on 30 August 1872.
