The Death of Captain Cook by the Natives of Owhyhee.

London: C.Cooke, 31 October, 1788.

Engraving, 155 x 215 mm (plate size), early hand-colouring.

Hand-coloured

An attractive and rather uncommon version of Webber's death of Captain Cook, newly engraved by William Grainger, with good early hand-colouring. Although in a reduced format, the engraving is neatly executed, and the use of simple colouring is very effective. Grainger is known to have collaborated with the publisher Cooke on many popular works in the late 1780s and 1790s.Known to Beddie from copies in the Mitchell and Dixson collections, it is also held in the National Library of Australia; nonetheless, this popular version of the infamous scene is quite rare.
