A major achievement by the Scottish historian Laing (1762-1818), "a work showing considerable research"(Britannica). Variously appended to the first and second editions of the "History" are dissertations on the Gowrie conspiracy, on the authenticity of Ossian's poems, and on the authorship of the Casket Letters (which Laing says were written by Mary, Queen of Scots, who he claims was partly responsible for the murder of Lord Darnley).
The set we are here offering is curious bibliographically. All four volumes have the 1804 title page, but the third and fourth volumes, which are fractionally taller, are apparently from the first printing of 1800, as they contain additional title-pages with the imprint of A.
Strahan for Cadell and Davis, along with the earlier date. But this is in no sense a made-up set, as the bindings for all four volumes were clearly executed at the time of publication and by the same binder.
