News of the wreck of La Pérouse's vessels off the reefs of Vanikoro had reached Calcutta in 1827, bringing with it a growing distrust of the character of the natives of the Pacific Islands. However this illustration seems to show a friendly and harmonious meeting between the Europeans and natives, engaging in the trade of supplies.
