Voyage en Chine et en Tartarie… traduit de l'anglais…. Sir George STAUNTON.

Voyage en Chine et en Tartarie… traduit de l'anglais…

Paris: la veuve Lepetit, 1804.

Seven volumes, duodecimo, comprising six text volumes with an atlas of uniform size containing a folding map and twenty double-page plates; original dark calf decorated in blind and gilt.

Beautiful French edition

A most attractive set of the delightful 'Bibliothèque portative' edition, a diminutive French version of the official narrative of the important Macartney embassy to China, by which the British sought to establish formal diplomatic and commercial relations. Staunton accompanied the embassy as Secretary, and compiled his book chiefly from the papers of the Ambassador and his fellow envoys. It is of great interest not only for its description of the exotic court of the emperor Qianlong (1793-1794) but also for its descriptions of the many places visited en route at the close of the eighteenth century.
