Allan le Jeune Déporté à Botany-Bay.

Paris: Desiree Eymery, 1836.

Small octavo, frontispiece, title vignette and three full-page engraved plates; contemporary prize label, a handsome copy in contemporary tree calf.

First edition of a scarce French children's story set in Australia about an errant child sent to the convict colony at Botany Bay. The introduction notes the work is one of moral instruction, teaching children valuable lessons in piety, honesty, honour and to love and respect their parents. Although the book is set in Australia, Muir notes the Gallic nature of its description with exotic passages on transportation, kangaroos and cannibals. The finely engraved plates are noteworthy: one depicts the hero, Allan, bound to a tree and struggling to escape as native figures dance around a blazing fire in the distance.

Ferguson, 2123b; Muir, 2598.
