The Anglican bishop Taylor, a contemporary of John Donne and Sir Thomas Browne, is revered for the tone and sympathetic style of his writings. In this manual for Christian living he discusses the religious life so 'that when we descend to our graves we may rest in the bosom of the Lord, till the mansions be prepared where we shall sing and feast eternally'. Coleridge situated him 'among the four masters of early seventeenth century literature, with Shakespeare, Bacon and Milton' (CHEL).
