Herschel defined…

This list is largely a re-assessment of the work done by English astronomer Sir John Herschel, of the mapping of the stars of the Southern Hemisphere which he conducted at the Cape of Good Hope, including a huge list of stars existing in binary - or multiple states. Russell revisits all of Herschel's calculations, corroborating, correcting and discarding entries and adding 350 new "double stars" to the list. Russell's premise for so doing is borne from a significant improvement both in technology and the quality of stargazing conditions in the Southern Hemisphere, especially at the Sydney Observatory.
