Her interest in the deplorable plight of prisoners began at an early age, most notably after she visited Newgate Prison in 1813. From then on she devoted herself to bettering conditions for prisoners and convicts. Her impact on the transportation system was remarkable, from changing the way prisoners were conducted to the docks from open wagons amongst jeering crowds to closed hackney coaches, to organising women on board to occupy themselves with needlework so that they would have a commodity to sell at ports of call and on arrival in New South Wales.
Susanna Corder was also a Quaker, and a rather prolific author of religious works.
