The 2021 California Antiquarian Book Fair will be our 33rd California fair, though this year it will be a digital fair running from Thursday 4 March through Saturday 6 March. Every year until now we have taken a booth next door to our good friends at William Reese Company of New Haven, removing the wall between the stands and between us showing the best of America and Australia. Times change.
So this year we can’t be there physically while the world takes a breath, but we have made a selection of rare material to exhibit online in the spirit of the wonderful annual show, the west coast meeting of the biblio-tribes.
Hordern House is participating in firsts: London's Rare Book Fair, exclusively online 18th-23rd February.
Highlights include: Johann and Georg Forster's pioneer work on the botany of Australia and the South Pacific (pictured); a rare and beautiful lithograph work published by a naval office in provincial France on tattooing in the South Pacific ; and the first two years of the Port-Breton journal La Nouvelle France spruiking the horrible fraud of the Marquis de Rays and his supposed paradise colony in New Guinea. Held exclusively online, Hordern House is pleased to be exhibiting at this inauguaral virtual 2020 event. Our catalogue features the beautiful series of Pacific lithographs by Richard Oliver (the rare coloured issue); maps of Dublin Harbour by an early career William Bligh; and the true first edition of Gulliver's travels, one of the great works of literature, and one with particular interest for Australia.
Our catalogue for the Melbourne Rare Book Fair, exclusively online, from 9-12 July features: an atmospheric watercolour of the Yarra River in dawn light by Julian Rossi Ashton; the original midshipman's log of a particularly interesting voyage to Australia 1852-54, by Harold Paynter, illustrated with most attractive unpublished drawings including a suite of four charts showing a dated track of the voyage, a fine double-page map of "Port Phillip 1853" with detailed soundings, and a series of sixteen coastal drawings; and the first South Australian illustrated book published, the rare suite of original views by Frederick Nixon.

The highlight of our July exhibit at the at the Melbourne Rare Book Fair 6-8th July will be Mr Cust's "Sandridge Railway Jetty and Pier". A small masterpiece: "Mr." Cust, an elusive artist whose first name is so far unknown, demonstrates with meticulous strokes an ability to conjure a sensation of intimacy and tranquility on the smallest scale. His work is reminiscent in this respect of some of the paintings of S.T. Gill; like Gill he combines a strong understanding of light and colour with a high degree of natural, artistic talent. This sensitively rendered painting is on academy board, to which Cust has painstakingly applied layer after layer of oil paint. For more detail click here.

Hordern House is again pleased to be exhibiting at the annual ANZAAB Melboure Rare Book Fair at Wilson Hall, University of Melbourne 22nd-24th July. Our July list has been prepared with this in mind and has items of rare Australian interest including the Rev. Johnson’s Address, Carboni’s Eureka Stockade, Fairholme's suite of Australian views highlighting early white settlement on the Darling Downs, and a fine 1861 painting of the First School House at Dandenong; together with early printed books: King James I Workes in a fine binding, La Popelinière's works of speculative geography, Moraleda's wonderful manuscript journal, and Blaeu’s great atlas of China. Join us from 11:00 am-4:00 om in the Gallery Room at the State Library of New South Wales.
