Geneva, Henri-Albert Gosse, 1750.
Quarto; title-page printed in black & red with engraved vignette, 34 engraved maps and plates, mostly folding; a fine copy in contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments.
Early French edition of the famous account of Anson's voyage (there was an Amsterdam edition, in a different French translation, the previous year). This is a handsome copy of this elegant French quarto. Based on Anson's own journal, this narrative had an enormous popular success: for the mid-eighteenth-century reader, it was the epitome of adventure. It was translated into several European languages and stayed in print through numerous editions for many years.
Not in the catalogue of the Hill collection.
