First edition: with a detailed and lengthy account of the Marquesas in the 1830s where Coulter assumed native dress, was tattooed (described here in detail) and became involved in a tribal war.
A surgeon on the Stratford during her voyage in 1832-1836, Coulter describes his visits to various South American ports, and the Galapagos Islands, and gives an account of whaling, including his personal experience of killing a whale. A long stay was made at the Chatham Islands where he toured the island and found a skeleton in an abandoned hut. He made three stops at Tahiti and gives a general account and discusses the English missionaries there in some detail.
